Humanoid Robot Safety Among Guests: Operators and Zone

Article summary
Is a humanoid safe among guests? Here is how safety at an event rests on two operators per robot, a designated zone and clear rules for children, and on what the robot does not do.
A humanoid robot among guests is safe when its deployment rests on three things: the robot is never left without human supervision, guests have a clearly defined space and distance, and the programme is agreed in advance. With ROBOTio, every robot is accompanied by a pair of operators throughout the event, who oversee the space, the photo queue and the robot itself. Below, we explain how this works in practice and what to ask as an organiser. ## Why Robot Safety at Events Matters A robot that moves, greets people and responds to passers-by naturally draws a crowd. Phones come out, guests press closer and children run straight towards the robot. At a trade fair, festival or corporate evening, it is therefore not enough simply to place a robot in the middle of the hall. You need someone who controls where the robot looks and where it goes, while also keeping an eye on where visitors are standing. That is why our operators are always part of [humanoid robot rental](https://robotio.eu/robot-rental). The robot is not handed over "turnkey" to the organiser; it arrives with people who know it well. ## The Role of Operators: Two People for Every Robot Throughout the event, every robot is accompanied by two ROBOTio operators. Their work can be summarised as follows: - **Controlling direction and gestures.** The robot maintains its own movement and balance, but the operator decides where it turns, where it moves and which gesture it makes. - **Supervising the space.** The operator watches who is approaching the robot and maintains a safe distance. - **Managing the queue.** During photo sessions, they manage the order of guests and the pace, so that no crowd forms around the robot. - **Adapting the programme.** They adjust the pace of the performance according to attendance and the mood in the room. - **Technical oversight.** They monitor the robot's condition and plan breaks, for example to change the battery. Having two people serves a practical purpose: one can concentrate on the robot, the other on the surroundings. If something is happening at the queue, the robot never has to be "left unattended". ## The Designated Zone: Where the Robot Works and Where Guests Stand A safe distance is planned in advance, not improvised on the spot. We determine the type and size of the space together with you, based on the format of your event. A few basic rules apply: - **A level, stable surface.** The robot needs firm ground. During preparation, we therefore agree where it will stand and what it will move across. - **A separate performance area.** The [ROBOrevue](https://robotio.eu/case-study/roborevue-svetova-premiera-pariz-2026) show lasts 5 minutes and requires a stage or a dedicated area of at least 12 × 6 m. The audience stands outside it. - **Distance in busy public settings.** In shopping centres and at trade fairs, we plan the programme with a safe distance for visitors and with breaks. - **An on-site rehearsal.** Installation and an on-site rehearsal are part of our offer, so we verify the zone before the first guests arrive. At trade fairs, the zone is often arranged around the stand, as described in the context of a [robot for trade fairs](https://robotio.eu/robot-hire-by-event-type). At city events, it is arranged through barriers and entry points, as shown by the [robot for city festivals](https://robotio.eu/robot-hire-by-event-type). ## Children at Events Children react to a robot most spontaneously. They want to touch it, run towards it and do not realise that the robot may move. For this reason, several principles apply at family events: - We never leave the robot or the queue without an operator's supervision. - Children are admitted to the robot gradually, not in a group. - We ask parents to stay with their children. - For the youngest visitors, a smaller and lower robot is often more suitable. This works well with the Go2 robot dog, which, in our experience, is especially popular with children and families. You can find out more on the [Unitree Go2](https://robotio.eu/unitree-go2) page or in the [ROBOpes](https://robotio.eu/robopes) overview. For smaller stands and photo opportunities with guests, the compact [Unitree G1 Basic](https://robotio.eu/unitree-g1-basic), standing 135 cm tall, is a good fit. One example is [Šantovka Family Day 2026 in Olomouc](https://robotio.eu/case-study/santovka-family-day-2026-olomouc), a family festival at which the humanoid was the main attraction. If you organise events for schools, also consider the [robot for primary schools](https://robotio.eu/robot-hire-by-event-type) format, where the space and programme are designed specifically for children. ## Programme and Lines Are Approved in Advance Safety is not only physical. The robot speaks in the language in which a guest addresses it, and both the persona and the lines are approved in advance. There is no uncontrolled improvisation that could damage your brand or offend guests. An example is the Podzimek company celebration in Třešť: the programme was built on more than 70 custom-recorded lines. You can find details in the project [Podzimek 130 Years](https://robotio.eu/case-study/podzimek-130-let-trest-2026). The same principle applies to conference scripts and corporate evenings. ## What the Robot Does Not Do Realistic expectations are part of safety. At an event, a humanoid: - **is not an autonomous "walker" without supervision.** Direction and gestures are controlled by an operator, and two people are always with the robot, - **is neither security staff nor a service attendant.** It does not guard entrances, remove guests or replace event staff, - **does not carry heavy objects or work physically with guests.** It is intended for welcoming, performances, photos and conversation, - **does not speak outside the approved framework.** The persona and lines are approved in advance, - **does not belong on uneven or unstable surfaces.** A level surface is a condition of deployment, - **does not run without breaks.** We plan the programme with pauses, for example to change the battery. If you are interested in the specifications of individual models, see the [Unitree brand](https://robotio.eu/brands/unitree) page and the overview of [models on offer](https://robotio.eu/models). If you need your team to be able to work with the robot on its own, [training and instruction](https://robotio.eu/services/training) is also available. ## Checklist for Organisers Before placing an order, please clarify the following: 1. Exactly where the robot will stand and what the surface is. 2. Where the guest zone will be and where the queue will run. 3. Whether many children will attend and how they will approach the robot. 4. Whether there is a power socket nearby, and access for the operator and transport cases. 5. How the lines and persona will be approved. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### Is a humanoid robot safe among guests? Yes, when deployed correctly. Every robot is accompanied by two operators throughout, who oversee the space, the guests' distance and the robot itself. A pre-arranged zone and an on-site rehearsal are part of this. ### Can children approach the robot? Yes, but under the operators' supervision and gradually. Children are admitted to the robot one at a time or in small groups, and parents stay by the queue. The Go2 robot dog is also often a good choice for families. ### Who controls the robot at the event? ROBOTio's own operators. The robot maintains its own movement and balance, while the operator controls direction and gestures. The organiser does not need any technical knowledge. ### What does the robot need from the organiser? A level, stable surface, a power socket nearby, and access for the operator and equipment. For the ROBOrevue show, an area of at least 12 × 6 m is also required. We take care of the rest. ## Non-Binding Enquiry Are you planning an event where guests and children will be among the robots?
